Jeffries has taken another step forward in its commitment to sustainable environmental and community practice with a green business assessment confirming their position as an industry leader. At the end of last year, Jeffries’ Managing Director, Lachlan Jeffries, contacted Carbon Planet to assess its environmental footprint. A comprehensive greenhouse gas emission assessment followed, with Carbon Planet illustrating the extent of Jeffries’ existing environmental initiatives falling below the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act (NGER) reportable corporation threshold. The assessment is the latest environmental star for the organisation, which has green policies and practices across various aspects of its business.
“We started out with recycling cardboard boxes and paper, as well as waste oil from engines. Our focus on green business practices has just grown from there,” Lachlan Jeffries said. Carbon Planet’s assessment report found that Jeffries’ major greenhouse gas emissions were from Stationary and Transport Fuels, which accounted for 79% of the total figure of 2316.7 tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year. Other areas included employee services, flights, equipment, third-party services and utilities.
“The assessment with Carbon Planet was just one step in our long-term commitment to minimising our environmental impact,” Lachlan said. “Over the past few years, we’ve worked hard to make our company as green as possible. We are always looking for new ways to make the business more environmentally friendly. It is reflected in everything from the light bulbs we use to the way we run our compost, soil and mulch operations.”
To further remove the impact of its emissions, Jeffries is researching ways to convert diesel powered engines to more sustainable electrical alternatives. An option for the future is to switch to green energy as well as purchase carbon offsets. Raising awareness in the community is important to Jeffries. The organisation is currently working with the Northern
Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA) to help educate students about the importance of recycling and waste management at NAWMA’s Environmental Education Centre. “As leaders, we are pushing the compost, soil and mulch industry forward by holding ourselves to a higher standard and implementing these practices before they are required”.
“Clients want to partner with an industry leader that drives energy-savings initiatives and is truly environmentally responsible. Consumers also care deeply about good manufacturing practices, and only Jeffries products and services can tout these environmental commitments.”
Lachlan said the Carbon Planet assessment is part of Jeffries’ commitment to operating in a sustainable and environmentally ethical manner. Established in 2000, Carbon Planet has been working with businesses around the world, helping them quantify the risks and explore the opportunities emerging in the carbon constrained economy. Carbon Planet offers a full-service suite of carbon assessment and management services, advising the business community on the many ways to tackle new issues, overcome emerging challenges and plan an approach that will satisfy legislative requirements.
