'We mix Jeffries Organic Compost into the soil and leave some on top. It keeps the soil moist, friable and easy to work with'

The Royal Adelaide Show has wrapped up again for another year. While the last of the sweets from the showbags are eaten and the wood chopping and fireworks displays become a memory, spare a thought for the cleanup challenges that are produced each year.
This year 461,385 people and 7,240 animals went to the Show, and whilst the record rainfall should have left the Showground sparkling, the task of cleaning up was still a big one!
Most of the animals are bedded down on sawdust and straw for one or more nights of the Show, and just like a five star hotel, the beds need to be changed each day. That’s more than 650 tonnes of material over the nine days of the Show to keep Australia’s blue ribbon livestock and their newborns comfortable during their stay in their home away from home at Wayville.
Jeffries works closely with the experienced team from SITA Environmental Solutions each year to recover and recycle the material used for the animal bedding each year. John Rothwell, Chief Executive of the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of SA says “We have had a long and successful working relationship with both SITA and Jeffries, and it’s fantastic that we can turn the manure and animal bedding generated from the Show into quality compost, soil and mulch products.”
In their twenty seventh year of working with the event, SITA currently uses innovative methods to recover other materials ranging from animal manure to cardboard. SITA’s State Operations Manager Peter Young says that they are working closely with the Show organisers to one day turn the Show into a zero waste event.
The professional approach that SITA uses to approach the job of cleaning up the Royal Adelaide Show is second to none, and we would like to thank Peter and the whole team at SITA for their efforts.
