From the kitchen to the garden

Oct 20, 2010

Residents within the Port Adelaide Enfield Council area can be congratulated for playing a big part in building a sustainable organics recycling loop.

Introduced in May 2010, the Council implemented a kitchen organics basket service which delivered a purpose designed bio-basket and cornstarch bags to residents within its Council area.

The food organics collected in the kitchen are placed into the Council green organics bin and delivered to the Jeffries state of the art composting facility to process into compost, soil and mulch products. These products are then used by home and vegetable gardeners, landscapers and horticulture farmers to improve their soils.

“The impact that the service has had is immediately apparent, with 10,000 more green organics bins per month being presented at the kerbside than normal, and 170 tonnes per month of additional valuable material being diverted from landfill” says Fred Newman, Director Environmental Services of City of Port Adelaide Enfield.

James Tilly, Environmental Account Manager at Jeffries says that the increase of bio-bags coming through the process is definitely noticeable, and the bags are breaking down nicely through the composting process. Pleasingly, early investigations have also found that limited visual contamination is being detected, showing that residents are ensuring that only food organics are placed into the bags.

The service has been very well received by residents and six months in is showing to be operating smoothly, with many residents congratulating the introduction of the kitchen organics basket saying that it has allowed them to feel like they are contributing to all aspects of household recycling.

Working together to recycle food organics to create improved soils and in turn the quality of our food - It’s yet another success story of South Australia’s commitment to recycling.
