Humphrey Howie’s family has been growing citrus on their Renmark property for over 100 years. Now known as Fat Goose Fruits, Humphrey and his wife Michelle run the business from their Renmark property and have an extensive range of juicy citrus products including orange varieties, lemons, limes and grapefruits.
Water restrictions in recent times have meant that Humphrey and Michelle needed to get smart about how they set about maintaining the orchard’s viability. They approached Jeffries to help them create the perfect blend of Jeffries Organic Compost blended with gypsum and lime which adds organic nutrients to the soil and helps to retain water.
“Our soils have always been a high priority for us, and we saw this opportunity as a way of building up the quality of the soil to give our fruits the most balanced environment possible to thrive in” says Humphrey.
Humphrey and Michelle have now converted three quarters of their property into a NAASA-certified organic property, and they continue to see the fruit of their hard work with a noticeable change in quality of the citrus fruits – they just keep getting juicier!
Make sure you pay Fat Goose Fruits a visit next time you visit the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Markets or Willunga Farmers’ Markets – if it’s good for the Goose, it’ll be good for you too.
