Hospitals are traditionally known for taking care of patients and bringing a new lease of life to many people struck down by illness or injury. There is a new group of hospitals across South Australia that can now be commended for also taking care of the environment – and receiving revitalised gardens in return.
Healthscope is one of Australia’s leading private healthcare operators and manages a network of hospitals across South Australia including Ashford Hospital, Flinders Private Hospital, The Memorial Hospital, Griffith Rehabilitation Hospital and Parkwynd Private Hospital. These sites have all chosen to take up a Commercial Food Organics collection service which delivers food organics generated from hospital kitchens to the Jeffries state of the art composting facility to process into compost, soil and mulch products.
Veolia Environmental Solutions have been able to successfully deliver this service in partnership with Jeffries, with collections commencing in March 2010. Veolia Business Development Manager Shane Jones says that the results have been positive and the service well received by the hospitals, with the collections running smoothly and a noticeable increase in volume of materials diverted from the general waste stream.
And in a true example of closing the loop, Ashford Hospital have chosen to use Jeffries Forest Mulch to help nourish and beautify their well-known rose gardens that surround the building. “It is such a wonderful idea to be able to dispose of our food organics and timber in a sustainable manner, and then close the loop by receiving the material that is produced to enhance our garden beds” said Ashford Hospital Hotel Services Manager, Peta Ryan.
