Innovative soil solution to conserve up to 50% of water at Adelaide Showgrounds $45m redevelopment

Jul 1, 2008

The Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society has teamed with South Australian compost, soil and mulch manufacturer, Jeffries, to incorporate water saving soil and mulch initiatives in their $45 million dollar redevelopment of the Adelaide Showgrounds site at Wayville.

The development includes 16,000sqm of landscaped outdoor area which utilises the latest water conservation products including 350 tonnes of Jeffries Hydrocell Soil, designed specifically for increasing water retention in garden beds. “The Society is keen to showcase horticultural and environmental best practice in the design of landscaped areas in the new development and set a benchmark for SA.” says Stuart Heseltine, Principal Designer, Hemisphere Design. “Jeffries Hydrocell Soil is an important part of the project as research shows this will help create optimum growing conditions for the native trees we’ve planted. People underestimate the importance of quality soil.”

Jeffries Hydrocell Soil contains large doses of Jeffries Organic Compost and the unique product Hydrocell, which has excellent water holding properties. Each Hydrocell flake will hold up to 60% of its volume in water. This enables water usage to be cut back by up to half without any negative impact on plant health or growth. Derived from recycled green organics, Jeffries Organic Compost retains water, and encourages healthier, faster plant and root growth through greater efficiency of water and nutrients.

Adding these two products together has created an extremely unique soil blend, perfect for helping landscapers and gardeners combat the current water shortages. “We have invested a substantial amount of money in mature trees to provide shade and are protecting our investment by using an innovative soil product.” says John Rothwell, CEO, Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society
