The Minister for Environment and Conservation, the Hon. Jay Weatherill, officially launched an innovative Food Organics Recycling Service at Drake Supermarkets’ Torrensville Foodland in November 2008. The Service, an initiative of Jeffries the Compost, Soil, and Mulch Experts, in partnership with Drake Supermarkets, will collect and recycle the food organics of thirteen participating Drake Foodland stores and turn it into valuable compost, soil and mulch, diverting it from landfill and reducing harmful greenhouse gases.
“Traditionally food organics have been disposed of with waste and sent to landfill. Now this precious resource can be collected separately and recycled. Drake are proud to be associated with this service – it’s a valuable initiative for staff to be involved in, good for business, and good for the environment.” says Roger Drake, Managing Director, Drake Supermarkets.
As well as a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions food organics recycling produces valuable compost, soil and mulch products utilised by home gardeners, landscapers and horticultural farmers, including vineyards, to improve their soils. The compost, soil and mulch products add nutrients and valuable carbon along with increasing the soils ability to retain water which significantly reduces water use.
“Recycling food organics, improving our soils and in turn the quality of our food... what a wonderful sustainable closed loop recycling outcome for South Australia.” says Lachlan Jeffries, Managing Director, Jeffries. Anything that once was living or was from something living can be recycled including meats, flowers, fruit, vegetables, tea, coffee, and dairy products. Contamination from plastics, string, polystyrene, shrink wrap and any other non organic materials must be prevented to ensure clean recycling.
