Vineyard Mulch Trial Results

Jan 18, 2012

Using the latest soil probe technology, an innovative trial is showing the effectiveness of mulch on one Riverland vineyard.

Six soil probes were used in the trial, which capture data every 15 minutes. This data is then displayed automatically online.

This website gives everyone including growers, wineries and winemakers, the opportunity to gain live data on how the trial is performing throughout the growing season. Other information about the trials such as rainfall, irrigation applied and irrigation frequency are also available on the website.

For this trial we are giving you special access to view the results first hand.

Once there click on one of the bottom three 'Soil moisture sum' links. These show the effect of the mulch on the three variants of rootstocks tested. Feel free to explore the rest of the site. (If you have trouble opening the links, ensure your browser is not blocking pop-ups).

Initial Observations

As the graph below shows, the impact of the mulch is clearly noticable. Particularly after irrigation and rainfall, the mulch is retaining the moisture for longer.
